On Friday, May 2nd, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater is “Goin’ Coen”, with two criminally hilarious classics from Joel and Ethan Coen, FARGO (1996) and THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998) on 35mm!Join us as we celebrate two gems from the treasure trove of Coen classics, involving Midwest murder, SoCal noir, missing toes, wood chippers, mallard stamps, a stolen rug, pregnant cops, and iconic performances from Frances McDormand, Jeff Bridges, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Peter Stormare.
First up is FARGO, a chilly tale of super-polite (and super pregnant) Minnesota police officer (Frances McDormand) investigating the shady dealings of a car salesman (William H. Macy) as they spin out of control into an increasingly serious (and seriously funny) mess. A solid crime tale, while also being straight-faced hilarious, FARGO went onto spawn a long-running TV series exposing the strange and quirky criminal underbelly of polite Midwestern society.
We follow that with the Coen’s blockbuster cult hit THE BIG LEBOWSKI, starring Jeff Bridges as “The Dude” (or El Duderino, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing), a stoner slacker who wants nothing more out of life than to spark up and roll a perfect game with his bowling buddies, the dim Donny (Steve Buschemi) and tightly-wound Walter (John Goodman), and how a series of seemingly unconnected events leads to a bizarre and gut-busting adventure for a guy who, at the end of the day, just wants his Creedence tapes and rug back. One of the most quotable films of the last 30 years!
