About this Event
Corra Sound and professional string ensemble will perform and record Ruth Gipps' Goblin Market and other notable works set to Rossetti texts.
Directed by Amy Bebbington, Corra Sound is an established upper voice British ensemble with a reputation for high quality artistic activity. Consisting of performers, conductors, composers, educators, parents, advocates and primary carers, our collective mission is to elevate women's voices by raising the profile of female creatives in all disciplines.
Set to Christina Rossetti's poem of the same name, Gipps' score dramatically illuminates its themes of temptation, desire, sisterly love and female solidarity, sparkling with impassioned and highly characterful motifs, hall-marks of this often overlooked twentieth century composer. Since then, it's been our dream to perform and record the full work, especially since this will be only its second UK performance after it's world premiere 70 years ago.
Ruth Gipps was a pianist, oboist, composer, conductor and educator. An impresario of tireless energy and determination, her music is now seeing a revival. As a response to the rife discrimination against female conductors that Gipps encountered, she founded and directed the London Repertoire Orchestra and the Chanticleer Orchestra, a professional ensemble which often included a a premiere performance of a work by a living composer.
Corra Sound will perform a programme with invited guests, including additional works by Nicola LeFanu, Kari Kruver Medina and an exciting new commission by Joanna Marsh. All these works will set texts by Christina Rossetti. In addition, to illuminate the life and artistic endeavours of Ruth Gipps, celebrated historian, Dr. Leah Broad, and Ruth Gipps' daughter-in-law, Dr. Victoria Rowe, will present an illuminating pre-concert 'in conversation' discussion. Our recording will take place a week after our concert by the highly respected label, Convivium Records.
The aim of this project is to encourage equity for female composers, performers and conductors in the international classical music sector, as we firmly believe that upper voice groups deserve greater visibility, recognition and celebration in a global choral market saturated by male or mixed voice choral ensembles.
