Come and play some Frisbee!50 years ago, some crazy students at the University of Warwick decided to start an Ultimate team. They called themselves the Warwick Bears as a nod to the ursine emblem of Warwickshire.
They've been going ever since, inspiring multiple generations of students to play Ultimate, drink beer from frisbees, growl at cameras and come up with more and more tenuous plays on the word bear.
Numerous ex-Bears have gone on to play at the highest levels of the sport, start new teams, take organisational roles and run tournaments.
25 years ago I celebrated the Bears Silver Anniversary and the same year I played in the final at my second Glastonbury.
This year's tournament theme is Golden Bears, in honour of not just Warwick's legacy, but half a century of continuous Ultimate Frisbee in the UK.
As ever, you are encouraged to interpret and do with that theme however and whatever you want. Brizzle, I'm open to changing your entry to Grizzle?
This year we have all the best bits of previous Glastos, but as always we'll have some new ones too.
So... Two days of Ultimate. Two nights of camping and clubhouse funtimes.
Competition in four brackets to win the Tor, the Plate, the Goblet or the Circlet. A chivalrous knight's helmet for the Spirit Winners. And a load of booze for the Party Prize, in addition to the usual cider and cider brandy distributed to the teams and pitches.
Come and get the weekend started on Friday 11th September. We'll have catering from Keystone Pizza and Grub Hub. Or there's Morrisons next door. There's gonna be free ice cream on Sunday afternoon too.
Matches on the showpitch will be livestreamed and recorded for posterity by the team from Ulti.TV
We also have the World's Greatest Frisbeeographer ™️ @NKolakovic as our official tournament photographer and videographer.
To make the Saturday night party fly, we have an awesome band playing in the newly refurbished clubhouse social room. I'll announce who it is once we can confirm the final team list.
And to help warm-down from your Saturday games, and warm-up for Saturday night, for the first time ever at Glastonbury, we're going to be Zorbing!
