About this Event

You are warmly invited to an intimate afternoon, with song in and around the burial cist, a research ritual to be with Rónán Ó Raghallaigh’s practice, in an improvised site responsive event. This event hosted by Glandwr, project space and home, is a slow building towards a new timely ecstatic collaborative performance. A testing ground to relate and resource within and through Knockmaree Cist, trusting in the power of the unseen.

Knockmaree Cist (ca. 2,500 BC) in the Phoenix Park held two skeletons, a periwinkle shell necklace, a flint knife and a bone dress-toggle. These were removed to the National Museum. The cist has been cracked, and is now held up by a concrete block. What happens when we remove grave holdings and put them in museums? How should we relate to ancient, hallowed graves today? What might they teach us? Who might we honour at them? Should we caoin (keen) at them, or celebrate them?

Rónán Ó Raghallaigh will bring us on a walk to this prehistoric burial site, perhaps once one of many that existed on Mariners Hill in the Phoenix Park which we believe embraced the sea in times gone by. A year long exploration draws you close to Rónán's research and practice. Bring hats, gloves, walking shoes, water and a piece of nature dear to you to offer to the site.

Rónán Ó Raghallaigh is an artist from Kildare. Working through painting, performance and writing, he explores intersecting Irish language, land and folklore as contemporary decolonisation. He received an MFA Art and the Contemporary World from NCAD in 2021. Recent projects include a solo exhibition of paintings in Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich, Belfast, and a filmed performance for Dunlavin Arts Festival and later shown at Visual Carlow for ‘Artworks 2025.’

Debi Paul is a visual artist and curator; her practice is rooted in both performance and place, with a focus on the body. She often draws on / learns from site – specific communities of interest. Her work observes the connection between practice and philosophy and ideas that relate to the material world. Current practice research focuses on ‘the sensate’ ritual, and elements of magic realism.
