Gender Inclusive Early Learning Environments

This professional learning session invites educators to reflect deeply on gender inclusivity and explore practical strategies for creating affirming environments in early learning and child care programs. Grounded in Nova Scotia’s Early Learning Curriculum Framework (NSELCF), the session emphasizes the importance of equitable, diverse, inclusive, and anti-bias practices in supporting children’s holistic development.

Through collaborative dialogue, case studies, role plays, and hands-on activities, participants will examine how gender concepts, bias, and stereotypes influence children’s experiences and explore ways to interrupt bias in everyday interactions. The session also highlights the role of play in identity formation and offers strategies for partnering with families to foster inclusive, culturally responsive environments.

At the conclusion of this professional learning session, participants will be able to :

  • Use foundational concepts and accurate gender terminology in their discussions and day-to-day practice.
  • Support inclusive, open-ended play experiences that allow children to express and explore gender freely and authentically, in alignment with Capable, Confident, and Curious: Nova Scotia’s Early Learning Curriculum Framework (NSELCF).
  • Apply strategies for communicating with children, families, colleagues about gender.

Note: It is highly recommended that participants complete the Culturally Responsive Practice (CRP) series before taking this session, as it provides foundational concepts that support equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible practice.
