Our January Meeting will be at the Advanced Learning Library in Conference Rooms B&C with a special presentation by Dr. William D. Keel. A brief summary of the program is below. German Migration to Kansas and their Settlements” focuses on the history of the migration of German-speaking persons to Kansas beginning in 1857, with the opening of Kansas Territory for
settlement, and continuing to the present day. We will explore what it means to be “German” in a broader European context. The major settlements of German speakers in Kansas and their cultural institutions, especially the many varieties of religious denominations that Germans brought to Kansas will be highlighted. Finally, we will take a look at the many varieties of
German dialects brought to Kansas by these immigrants and the outlook for the continued speaking a varieties of German in Kansas such as Pennsylvania Dutch and Mennonite Low
