Georgetown and Legacies of Slavery: Honoring Stories, Embracing Communities

Come join us as we explore Georgetown's ties to slavery and celebrate the diverse communities that have shaped its legacy.
About this Event

In recognition of the commitment by local memory workers and historians to honor the legacy of slavery in the making of the places we know today here in Georgetown, and in respect for the International Decade for People of African Descent, we are inviting you to join us to share this work. Given the complexity of narratives of people of African descent enslaved in this neighborhood, we are collectively focused on contributions and stories that have traditionally been neglected in our institutional histories.

The Georgetown and Legacies of Slavery Forum is by invitation only and organized by members of Georgetown University, Dumbarton Oaks, Tudor Place, Mt Zion and Female Union Band Society cemeteries. This multidisciplinary conversation will consider the challenges and opportunities faced by institutions and communities as they bring the legacies and stories to light.

We invite you to join us for this important conversation. If you should have questions, please contact Thaïsa Way at [email protected].

Please RSVP by Monday, November 11 to confirm your participation. We will provide a box lunch for all participants.

We hope to see you there!
