Universal's second werewolf attempt was lightning in a bottle, with Lon Chaney Jr. creating the Larry Talbot character, which he'd reprise several times. The wicked transformation scenes and eerie atmosphere helped establish the modern werewolf mythos. Chaney's performance established him as a Hollywood star and “The Wolf Man” as a monster classic. The monster's appearance works brilliantly for its time.
