The Department (co-sponsored by Duke Theater Studies) welcomes Drs. Mary Hamil and Edith Gwendolyn Nally to Duke on Thursday, October 2, 2025. They will give a talk on Hecuba at 5pm in the Holsti-Anderson Room (Rubenstein Library 153) with a reception to follow in Allen 103A. This talk explores Hecuba’s matriarchal power in Euripides and charts her emergence as a paradigm of maternal-political power—a power of a kind which has gone without sufficient comment in classical studies despite standing in striking opposition to both ancient Greek and contemporary forms of patriarchy.
