About this Event

On the occasion of Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (January–June 2026), the A. G. Leventis Gallery brings to London the internationally acclaimed exhibition George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus. Presented at the Hellenic Centre, this landmark exhibition offers UK audiences a rare opportunity to encounter the extraordinary work of one of Cyprus’s most influential modern artists.

About the Exhibition

George Pol. Georghiou (1901–1972) is celebrated for his deeply poetic visual narration of Cyprus’s cultural and historical identity. His paintings—rich with symbolism, memory, folklore and a profound love for his homeland—capture the spirit of Cyprus across decades of social and historical change.

The exhibition features major works created in the 1940s and 1950s, many of which were returned from Famagusta after more than forty years, thanks to the efforts of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. These works, reunited with the public for the first time in decades, reveal a powerful artistic voice shaped by history, resilience and devotion to Cyprus’s people.

Curated by Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, Katerina Stephanides, and based on the vision of the late Eleni S. Nikita, the exhibition explores Georghiou’s allegorical landscapes, iconic figures, intimate village scenes and monumental compositions—creating a vivid portrait of “Cyprus” across time.
