The purpose of oldinsurancemaps.net is to create a public space for georeferencing historical Sanborn fire insurance maps of Louisiana. As users georeference map sheets one by one, mosaics begin to emerge showing snapshots of local history around the state. The georeferenced maps are also published as web services and can be used in desktop GIS software or other web maps.
The project is part of Adam Cox's master's thesis in Geography and Library & Information Science at LSU. Before starting grad school at LSU in 2019, Adam worked for a number of years as a GIS consultant and developer, primarily in the intersection of cultural resources and open source software.
