About this Event

We are delighted to announce that the Annual Lecture for the Discipline of Geography will take place on the 18th of February 2025. This year's lecture will be delivered by Prof. Mark Friedl from Boston University, with a talk entitled:

Making Sense of Pixels at Planetary Scale: Using Earth Observations to Measure and Monitor Change in Terrestrial Ecosystems at Regional to Global Scales

The lecture will take place in the Haughton Lecture Theatre (HLT) in the Musuem Building in Trinity College Dublin, from 6pm and will be followed by a wine reception in the Museum Building Foyer.

Prof. Friedl is the Director of Center for Remote Sensing and the William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of Mathematics and Science. His research focuses on the uses of remote sensing to examine biogeophysical patterns and processes at the Earth’s surface. He is particularly interested in how land cover and ecosystem properties affect surface climate, how land surface biophysics influence the Earth’s weather and climate system, and more generally, how human activities are shaping the planet and affecting the global biosphere. Prof. Friedl has conducted extensive research in this area and is a member of the MODIS Science team and the PI for Land Cover in the MODIS Land Discipline Group.

We are thrilled that he will be joining us as this year's Special Guest Lecturer.
