About this Event
The National Monuments Service is hosting this one-day, in-person only event, in the Hibernia Centre, Dublin Castle, on 18 February 2025 to mark the 70th Anniversary of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, and the 25th Anniversary of its Second Protocol of 1999.
The event will focus on the destruction of Irish cultural heritage during the 1916 Rising, the Civil War, and the early years of the foundation of the Irish State, while also exploring the progress Ireland has made since that time, to protect and safeguard its valuable and shared historic heritage.
Ireland has been a State Party to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, and its Second Protocol, since 2018. These important international instruments help to ensure that cultural property is protected, regardless of origin or ownership, and this conference is designed to highlight the enduring nature, and significance, of its principles.
