The Mark Ginsburg Band returns to Smith’s Alternative on Wednesday March 4, bringing their distinctive blend of original contemporary jazz and reimagined standards to one of Canberra’s most loved live music venues.Led by saxophonist and composer Mark Ginsburg, the band features an outstanding lineup: James Kennedy (trombone), Ryan Grogan (piano), James Luke (bass), and Nick McBride (drums). Together they present a program of original compositions by Ginsburg and Grogan alongside selected jazz standards — all delivered with the group’s signature energy, warmth, and adventurous spirit.
Over the past decade, Ginsburg has led a range of innovative projects including Convergence, the Mezza/Ginsburg Ensemble, the popular South African Project, and most recently Oceans Together, a collaboration with Grogan. His album Generations was nominated for Best Independent Jazz Album by AIR, while Convergence received Best Jazz CD from the Indie Acoustic Project in the USA.
Audiences can expect expressive improvisation, rich ensemble interplay, and engaging melodic writing, showcasing a band that balances sophistication with accessibility.
