Course Breakdown
Hand-building is the art of creating ceramic forms with your hands and simple tools as opposed to using the potters wheel. This course is carefully structured and guided throughout, ensuring you build skills progressively and confidently. It is perfect for beginners or those wanting to revisit and strengthen their foundational techniques.

Week 1 – Coil & Pinch Techniques
An introduction to clay and hand-building fundamentals. You’ll learn how to create forms using pinch pot and coiling methods, focusing on joining techniques, and shaping.
Week 2 – Slab Building Techniques
Working with rolled slabs, you’ll learn how to construct more architectural forms, including joining flat planes, refining edges, and adding surface detail.
Week 3 – Project Week
Using all the techniques learned, you’ll design and create your own piece. This may be functional or sculptural but the focus is on combining skills.
Break Week – Drying & First Firing
Your work will dry fully and be bisque fired during this period.
Week 4 – Glazing & Finishing
An introduction to glazing techniques and surface finishing. You’ll learn how to apply glaze confidently and prepare your piece for its final firing.
