In this talk, Geert Bevin explores how MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) brings acoustic-style nuance and expressiveness into the world of electronic instruments. He’ll walk through the origins of MPE, his contributions to the specification, and several of the expressive instruments he has helped design. Geert will also discuss the key challenges, insights, and future directions shaping the next generation of digitally expressive performance.Geert Bevin is a programmer, designer, musician, and leading contributor to modern expressive electronic instruments. Director of Software Development at Moog Music and principal software engineer and co-designer of the LinnStrument, he is a key figure in developing the MPE specification. Geert created SendMIDI, ReceiveMIDI, ShowMIDI, and multiple gestural-interaction tools including MidiWrist, Geco MIDI, GameWAVE, and MIDI Widgets for Vision Pro, the world’s first spatial MIDI designer.

A flow artist, performer, and martial-arts practitioner, he brings a movement-focused perspective to instrument design. Geert also pioneered Gentoo Linux, created the RIFE web framework and the bld build tool, and designed the 3D-printable Dynamod dungeon-tile system. He sings and performs on guitar and Harpejji.
