In alignment with OVNi’s 2024 theme "The Great Game" and Carbon’s manifesto "When War Will End?", this residency will unite five Ukrainian digital artists to explore the interplay between the universal concept of play and the lived reality of war. Titled "Game of Resilience", the project reimagines play as both a coping mechanism and a strategy for survival, focusing on how game-like structures can represent and transform experiences of conflict.Through video art, motion graphics, and interactive installations, the artists will reflect on the "rules" imposed by war and their subversion through creativity. Each participant will develop a work that interprets war as a forced game—a cruel throw of dice—and counters it with their own "moves" of resistance, resilience, and hope.
The residency will include:
Creation of Works: Alina Khorolska, Yevhen Ivanenko, Svitlana Reinish, Alex Sirous, Alena Danilova will develop audiovisual art pieces, merging themes of chance, strategy, and the absurdity of conflict.
Public Engagement: Audiences will engage in artist talks and discussions exploring how playful aesthetics can frame serious socio-political narratives.
Exhibition: The works will transform Villa Victoria hotel rooms into immersive spaces where visitors interact with digital narratives of war and recovery, challenging traditional spectator roles.
By juxtaposing the emancipatory potential of play with the gravity of wartime narratives, this residency will serve as a testament to the power of art to provoke thought, bridge divides, and inspire change, bringing a uniquely Ukrainian perspective to the international stage.
