Staffordshire St presents a four-day programme prioritising trans visions of the non-linear time-space, wrapping around queer skins and hairs. The group of queer digital artists are in the portals, props, and false promises of (the other) worlds. Through installations, memes, video games, costumes, critical essays, and more, they use the queer technology of fantasy– world-building, body (avatars) building, and storytelling–to suggest fabulous ways to be with each other (with care, nightmares, and fan-fictions).
Interested in creating and habituating other worlds, Swords and Kisses centres queer+trans diasporic/immigrating experiences. Drawn from their experiences of failed or successful passings: being able to, or unable to, pass borders, and/or pass as a certain gender, the artists critically approach the theme of fantasy. Their works prompt important questions to ask cyborgs who live wireless wired lives. Why do we create portals? Which bodies are allowed in the other worlds? What dreams and nightmares do we bring to this new avatar of ours? How do we appropriate the false promises of rebranded virtual worlds by corporations? What props or toolkits shall be created for mutual care in our boldest fantasies?
Staffordshire St
Staffordshire St is an independent project space in Peckham, South East London. The venue facilitates arts and cultural events and provides affordable studios for artists, makers and designers.
The venue was recently established as an art gallery, before then it was for many years a community centre and originally it was built as a Methodist Hall. will build on the established record of these histories, opening up again to the neighbourhood and developing a welcoming interdisciplinary arts space.
