Join us for an enriching professional development session exploring representation and the non-Western gaze through contemporary art.
About this Event

During the session we will consider how representation, defined as the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way, shapes our perception of art and its subjects, particularly through the lens of the non-Western gaze. This exploration will provide a deeper understanding of the influence and impact of cultural perspectives in art.

We will be experimenting with ways to create art from a scientific base using aspects of 'force' and the magic of combining different materials to achieve unique effects. Sharing innovative and interdisciplinary techniques using mixed media that can be applied in educational settings.

This practical workshop will be led by artist and creative facilitator Esther Adesigbin, who will share her experience of using exciting creative materials in the classroom to promote agency in learning.

The inspiration for making will be the group show 'Vital Force' featuring striking works by renowned artists including El Anatsui, Kenji Yoshida, LR Vandy, Romuald Hazoumè, Golnaz Fathi, Williams S. Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and Govinda Sah 'Azad,' among others. This exhibition will offer insights into the diverse voices and artistic expressions of some of the artists represented by the October Gallery.

‘When combining dramatically dissimilar art from diverse origins, unpredictably spectacular effects can occur, and one must be alert to catch those special moments of resonance that draw the works together.’
