OHS, in partnership with PSU Film, is proud to host a free public screening at PSU’s Lincoln Studio Theater on January 29 of the film GAINING GROUND (2015) by Elaine Velazquez and Barbara Bernstein. The event will also serve as a celebration of life for Elaine, who passed away in August 2025.
Elaine was a longtime Portland filmmaker, an early advocate of analog video, a teacher, artist, and agitator — and an all-around lovely person. OHS hosted a screening of Elaine’s first film SOME OF THESE DAYS (1980) in the research library in March 2025, and she was touched by the turn out and the opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones.

From farms in the fertile Willamette Valley to the marginalized food desert of Richmond, California, Gaining Ground shows how growing healthy food is a catalyst for igniting hope and empowerment in rural and urban communities.
