Discover how to gain a competitive edge by recruiting and hiring individuals who are bedbound or homebound.
About this Event

As workplace diversity continues to evolve, HR and recruiting leaders are increasingly recognizing the untapped potential of bedbound and homebound talent. These individuals, often sidelined due to medical conditions like spinal leaks, possess unique skills and expertise but require flexible accommodations to re-enter the workforce. This webinar will highlight the strategic advantages of recruiting from this overlooked talent pool and demonstrate how HR leaders can cultivate an inclusive, equitable workplace that supports diverse needs.

My article on this issue for a client in the recruiting industry ranks top on Google for "bedbound talent." You will see a few other recruiters below this article, starting to realize the advantage of niching into a focus on working with highly-qualified bedbound talent, some who were former executives before a lumbar puncture suddenly disabled them and organizations would not hire someone who a) was not able to come in person to sites and 2) able to site up on Zoom for extended periods of time.

Research has shown that people who are homebound due to their disabilities are the lowest-employed group across all disability types. Yet you will rarely see this discussed as "out of sight, out of mind." In my own experiences, people associate competence with mobility, and I have encountered recruiters who were unwilling to believe that I was unable to come into the officel.

Keyword such as "working lying down" have a significant amount of traffic with relatively little competition and present a more accurate picture of how many women are bedbound currently (often due to misdiagnoses such a POTS and told there is no cure when POTS is known to often be secondary to spinal leaks--a fixable condition in many cases).

Imagine the end result for your talent brand if you tapped into this niche, demonstrated your adherence to gender equity and disability equity simultaneously through your efforts, and likewise used your corporate social responsibility (CSR) budget to stimulate the local economy through a call-to-action through small business grants for local physicians to start practices offering evidence-based care for the gold standard for a spinal leak: a minimally invasive procedure where physicians inject the patients' own blood into their epidural space. Even research has called the epidural blood patch "magical" for its ability to work with the body's healing properties. However, as patient experience and marketing consultants who work with both physicians and HR/Recruiting, we are aware that knowledge on this treatment has declined among physicians despite research continuing to highlight this treatment as the gold standard due to low insurance reimbursement rates. Due to knowledge gaps and insurance reimbursement gaps, as a marketing consultancy we have strict continuing education requirements for the physicians we work with in a concierge care model focused on accessibilit, financial sustainability, and demonstrated positive patient outcomes.

In this session, as an HR or Recruiting leader, you will learn how equity, more than just a buzzword, is a powerful tool for building a resilient and innovative workforce. We will cover the practical steps to create inclusive workplace policies, such as remote work models, flexible schedules, and accessible return-to-work plans. Special attention will be given to women affected by spinal leaks, a growing group disproportionately impacted by workplace practices that fail to accommodate positional disabilities.

Key takeaways will include:

  • The difference between equity and equality in the workplace and how understanding this can lead to better employee engagement, reduced absenteeism, and a stronger talent brand.
  • The importance of recognizing and supporting bedbound talent, including those impacted by conditions like spinal leaks, and how flexible, remote work opportunities can help them thrive.
  • How companies can implement accessibility-focused policies, from customized healthcare benefits to disability employee resource groups (ERGs), to better serve homebound and bedbound workers.
  • Strategies for promoting gender equity, with a focus on how spinal leaks, which primarily affect women, can be better addressed to keep valuable employees in the workforce.
  • How companies can boost their brand through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives that support spinal leak awareness and inclusive practices.
  • The value of data-driven insights to continuously improve equity efforts and create an environment where all employees can succeed.

By actively tapping into this growing pool of talent, companies can not only promote gender and disability equity but also enhance their innovation, performance, and reputation. Join us to discover how your organization can gain a competitive edge by embracing bedbound and homebound talent in a meaningful and impactful way.
