About this Event
How to see Gaia at Southwark Cathedral
Entry during the day is free but it is essential you have registered for a ticket(s) in advance.
We will be operating a one way system due Gaia's residence at Southwark. Entrance will be via the Cathedral Churchyard opposite Borough Market and exit will be via the Cathedral courtyard located on the north side opposite the River Thames.
There is no charge for daytime entry to the Cathedral to see Gaia, but donations are encouraged (suggested donation of £3 per person). Donations are vital for supporting the Cathedral’s ongoing Mission and Ministry, and to continue to enable important projects and exhibitions like Gaia.
Gaia may close early on some days so please visit our website for opening times to avoid disappointment.
Saturday tickets, evening and special events tickets must be booked separately with information available at the following link https://cathedral.southwark.anglican.org/visiting/gaia
About GaiaGaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface the artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions.
The installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.
Luke JerramLuke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live arts projects. Living in the UK but working internationally since 1997, Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects which have excited and inspired people around the globe. Jerram has a set of different narratives that make up his practice which are developing in parallel with one another. He is known worldwide for his large scale public artworks.
