Among the lot of hidden amazing things about Knoxville is the existence of world class outdoor rock climbing spots that people from all over the world visit. But before you can climb outdoors for free you must learn the basics indoors, it is a pricey affair with a 20$day pass but 3-4 times is essential. Since starting these events we have a pretty good group of regular climbers that climb with me and we are all but set to go climb outdoors in the fall.

Important notes for beginners and first timers

1. Safety - having climbed over 20 years I can say "sports climbing" is one of the safest outdoor sport with least potential for injuries IF you do it right. So please pay close attention to instructions by river sports staff and other experienced climbers.
2. Technique not strength - Rock climbing is about balancing yourself on the wall and climbing with your legs, technique is 80% to climb better and strength is 20%. Please check out the first 3 sections in the link below, "climbing moves" section is for advanced climbers and can be ignored.

3. Avoid excessively loose clothing or things that can hang away from your body while climbing.
