At VERA Downstage, we value variety in our program. That’s why we decided NOT to invite an Australian punk band to play in Groningen’s coziest dungeon, but a psychedelic punk band! I know, it’s radical, and it was a tough choice because we weren’t sure if it was too far from home, but sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith.
So, Fungas hails from Newcastle, Australia. Fans of the early albums of Thee Oh Sees, Wand, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will be thrilled. And I can attest to that, as someone who became a fan of these bands in 2014. What does that mean? Crazy synth and guitar parts that only someone with ADHD could write, fuzz so deep you drown in it like it’s a shag carpet, and drums that chop so hard you’d demolish a forest. And you know what, then the wood can rot on the forest floor and funky fungi grow out of it that look like a new band that just so happens to be called Fungas. And their innovative side is a little sauce of eggpunk, like Snooper. Because yes, we’re 10 years later, and eggpunk is also big in Australia right now.
