Guided walk, led by a Blue Badge guide, in the Putney area, with a bit of an 'Indian' theme, fund-raising for an Indian educational charity.
About this Event

THE WALK WILL BE ADVERTISED AS A FREE EVENT, I WILL TAKE NO MONEY FOR IT. HOWEVER, ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUESTED TO MAKE A DONATION OF AT LEAST £15 TO ASHA BY THE DATE OF THE WALK. (https://asha-india.org/how-you-help/donate/ )

In particular the walk is supporting fund-raising for a team from St Stephen's Church, East Twickenham, who will be visiting Delhi in October, and doing voluntary work there in support of Asha's educational and humanitarian projects in slum-areas. I will be a member of this team. I will be financing my own travel, the guided walk is fund-raising towards an additional gift of at least £5000 the team plans to raise for Asha, in preparation for the visit.

Some highlights of the walk will include

  • The only plaque in London (or anywhere, as far as I know!) dedicated to a number, and to the tragic story of one of India's greatest mathematicians.
  • The University Boat Race and Thames rowing - sport for the elite and the masses.
  • Memorial to the International Brigades - Communists who fought Fascism, while the rest of the world slept.
  • A British-born heroine of London Thames floods, who became part of an Indian family.

- and more.

There will be a break, long enough for coffee and light refreshments, as well as for loos. The walk will cover a slightly longer distance than typical for a fully guided walk, about 3 miles in all, almost entirely level.

Meet at the London-bound exit of Barnes rail-station (also served by 33, 265, and 419 bus routes). End-point will be at or close to Putney Bridge tube station, you will be very welcome to accompany me to a pub afterwards if you wish.
