FSEA April Meeting: STALITE

This presentation will introduce expanded shale, clay and slate (ESCS) lightweight aggregates (LWA). It will briefly explain the rotary kiln process for manufacturing ESCS lightweight aggregates discuss characteristics and properties of LWA and will take a look at some of the applications and projects which have used lightweight aggregate and structural lightweight concrete.

Ken Harmon is the Director of Engineering Resources and Territory Manager for STALITE Lightweight Aggregate Company. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Georgia and is a member of ACI, ASCE, AREMA and is Past Secretary of ASTM Subcommittee C09.21 Lightweight Aggregates and Concrete. He is a Past-Chairman of the Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute (ESCSI) Board of Directors and the ESCSI Structural Committee. Ken was the Concrete Promotion Engineer for the Georgia Concrete & Products Association from 1987 – 1993, and was a bridge design engineer in the HNTB Atlanta Office 1979 – 1987. He has authored papers for numerous conferences and symposiums including ACI, PCI, CANMET/ACI, ECI, etc.

Stalite Lightweight Aggregate is a family-owned business based in Salisbury, NC. They have two plants in North Carolina that manufacture rotary kiln expanded slate structural lightweight aggregate. Stalite has distribution terminals from Miami to New York to California and Washington state and has supplied projects in the Caribbean and Norway.
