The Armenian Highland has been depicted in the legends and folk tales of the Armenian people for thousands of years. Mountains of the Armenian Highland, with their enormous size, restless volcanic activities, often erupting with fire and lava, shaking the earth, making terrible roars, were taken by the locals as a source of enormous force and movement and living beings to be worshipped.
The territory of Armenian Highland has a complex and unique structure which fuels the interest of well-known scientists and researchers to observe the geological conditions of this area. Because of its location, Armenian Highland is distinguished from the neighboring Anatolian and Iranian plateaus.
Lake Sevan
Legends about dragon-like fish living in the lakes and turning their surroundings upside down have passed generations to generations.
Lake Sevan is the largest body of water in both Armenia and the Caucasus region. It is one of the largest freshwater high-altitude (alpine, 2000 m) lakes in Eurasia. Sevan is considered one of the three great "seas" of historic Armenia. It is the only one within the boundaries of present-day Republic of Armenia.
Geghama Mountains
The best way to discover the hidden treasures of Armenia to trek Geghama Mountains. The trip to Geghama Mountains is an escape from civilization, where only shepherds with their flocks, lovers of isolation and wilderness go. Here you will find people called Yazidi – one of minorities of Armenia, who move to the mountains for the summer and live in tents with families and even with infants.
Geghama mountain range has a volcanic origin. The length of the range is 70 km, and the width is 48km. The highest peak is Mount Azhdahak (3597 m). In the crater of Azhdahak you will find a crystal-clear crater lake, filled with icy water of the mountains all year round.
