On March 12 at 18:00, Contour Art Gallery (Šv. Kazimiero St. 7–9, Vilnius) will open the exhibition "From the Same Soil" by two artists from Ukraine – Sofiia Horbachevska and Veronika Synenka.
This exhibition is not about dialogue.
It is about simultaneity.
Ukrainian artists Sofiia Horbachevska and Veronika Synenka exist within the same war, but in different environments. One is embedded in the territory, the other operates after relocating.
Soil is not a metaphor. It is a condition.
In the practice of Sofiia, who creates fragile ceramic sculptures in Kyiv, earth is used directly as material. Yet clay becomes a tool not to produce objects but to test limits: between line and volume, between gesture and resistance.
“When exhaustion completely paralyzes you, when even the simplest daily actions become unreachable, only one thing remains - to sculpt. These works were born not out of strength, but from its absence. It is not an attempt to hold on to art, but an attempt to hold on to life. An attempt to endure a state in which you no longer recognize yourself, when you feel like debris washed ashore, like the bones of dead animals – unnecessary, broken, unwanted. You sculpt without meaning, without a plan, without a clear task. You sculpt mechanically and intuitively, simply something. Not because you want to, but because it is the only thing you are still able to do. Otherwise you will disappear.

For Veronika Synenka, soil becomes significant through forced displacement. Personal belongings hastily gathered and carried across the border cease to be merely functional. They no longer belong to everyday life. They belong to testimony. These objects mark the boundary between before and after, becoming silent companions of identity, portable homes.
“When I left Ukraine, I could not take much - only a few things chosen almost without thinking, almost blindly: two books ("Faust" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and "Steppenwolf" by Hermann Hesse), my sketchbook, a few pencils, some tobacco, and other tools of a nicotine slave’s daily rituals. Crossing the border from Ukraine into Lithuania was not only a physical movement. It was a profound inner rupture.”

Works created with these objects document transformation, survival, and traces of lived experience. They resist disappearance without interpretation, commentary, or conclusions.
The artists do not illustrate war, loss, or identity. They work with material as a witness with what has already been affected and therefore requires no explanation.
One of them stays with the soil.
The other carries soil indirectly, through survived moments.
"From the Same Soil" does not claim a shared experience. It indicates a condition shaped by the same land, unfolding into radically different consequences.

Ši paroda ne apie dialogą.
Ji – apie vienalaikiškumą.
Ukrainietės menininkės Sofiia Horbachevska ir Veronika Synenka yra tos pačios karo apimtos šalies atstovės, tačiau jų aplinka šiuo metu skirtinga. Viena – neatskiriamai susijusi su vieta, kita – palikusi karo apimtą teritoriją.
Žemė šioms menininkėms nėra metafora. Tai – sąlyga.
Kyjive trapias keramikos skulptūras kuriančiai Sofijai žemė yra kūrybos medžiaga. Molis jai ne tik priemonė objektui sukurti, bet ir būdas patikrinti ribas tarp linijos ir tūrio, tarp gesto ir pasipriešinimo. „Kai nuovargis visiškai paralyžiuoja, kai net paprasčiausi kasdieniai veiksmai tampa neįmanomi, lieka tik viena – lipdyti. Šie kūriniai gimė ne iš stiprybės, o dėl jos trūkumo. Tai ne bandymas užsikabinti už meno, tai bandymas užsikabinti už gyvenimo. Bandymas ištverti būseną, kurioje nebeatpažįsti savęs, kai jautiesi kaip į krantą išplautos nuolaužos, kaip irstantys gyvūnų kaulai – niekam nereikalinga, sudaužyta, nepriimtina. Lipdai be prasmės, be plano, be aiškios užduoties. Lipdai mechaniškai ir intuityviai, tiesiog kažką. Ne todėl, kad nori, bet todėl, kad tai – vienintelis dalykas, kurį dar sugebi. Nes kitaip išnyksi. Ir per šį procesą vėl atrandi save.“ Sofiia Horbachevska.
Veronika Synenka žemė tapo svarbi dėl to, kad jai teko priverstinai persikelti. Skubotai susirinkti asmeniniai daiktai, kirtę sieną kartu su ja, praranda savo tiesiogines funkcijas. Jie nebepriklauso kasdieniam gyvenimui – jie yra liudijimas. Šie daiktai žymi ribą tarp „prieš“ ir „po“, tampa tyliais tapatybės palydovais, nešiojamais namais. „Kai išvykau iš Ukrainos, negalėjau pasiimti daug daiktų – tik kelis, pasirinktus beveik nesusimąstant, beveik aklai: dvi knygos (Johano Volfgango Gėtės (Johann Wolfgang Goethe) Faustas ir Hermano Hesės (Hermann Hesse) Stepių vilkas), savo eskizų knyga, keli pieštukai, šiek tiek tabako ir kiti nikotino vergo kasdienių ritualų įrankiai. Sienos kirtimas iš Ukrainos į Lietuvą buvo ne tik fizinis veiksmas. Tai gilus vidinis lūžis.“ Veronika Synenka.
Kūriniai dokumentuoja transformaciją, išlikimą ir gyvenimo patirties pėdsakus, priešinasi išnykimui be įprasminimo, komentarų ar išvadų.
Menininkių darbai nėra karo, netekties ar tapatybės iliustracija. Jos dirba su medžiaga kaip liudininke. Su tuo, kas jau paveikta ir todėl nereikalauja paaiškinimo.
Viena jų – lieka su žeme.
Kita – per savo išgyvenimus netiesiogiai nešasi žemę savyje.
Paroda Iš tos pačios žemės nepretenduoja į bendrą patirtį. Ji nurodo vietą ir visiškai skirtingą būvį.
