COURSE OVERVIEW

This eight week course will explore different approaches to image construction driven by the materialities that traverse between painting and printmaking. By exploring inherent images developed through various painting practices, the potential of these images will be tested through relief and intaglio printmaking practices introduced, to realise new possibilities at the threshold between specific mediums. Starting at the level of pigment, various combinations of paint/ink mediums, surfaces, applications and processes will be experimented with in the realisation of both discovered and chosen subjects. This will be for those who are new to painting and printmaking or who might already have significant experience.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

You will explore various approaches in constructing images, while gaining an understanding of the material potential of paint and ink mediums, through a range of pigment/binder mixtures and paint/medium ratios introduced.

Both conventional and modern pigments, inks and paints will be introduced as well as some diverse applications.

Various ways of preparing and constructing surfaces will be initiated to broaden your comprehension of related materials on this course.

Posing the question of whether a subject is necessary, to favour the notion of whether a structure can allow a subject to emerge. This will be discovered through the experimentation of materials introduced in a supportive learning environment.

Course aims:

-Developing ways of identifying source material and subjects with a focus on how an image can unfold through the substance and qualities of paint/ink ratios, mixtures and applications introduced.

-To introduce and/or build on levels of understanding in the development of conventional and/or non-conventional notions of pictorial ideas.

-Explore how identified pictorial ideas traverse between the material processes (and languages) of both painting and printmaking.

-To realise how forms of mark making manifest themselves in different ways through uses of materials, surfaces and processes that meet at the threshold between painting and printmaking.

-To set up various conditions to find out how different images register in compositional space, in both: singular and multiple; sequential and layered approaches connected to both painting and printmaking.

-To begin to understand or gain more perception of the potential languages of painting and printmaking, and how the substance of relevant materialities, such as colour, resonate in pictorial ideas that will be identified and shaped.
