About this Event
Join SFU Economics for a free workshop by the Risk Analytics Institute (RAI) on how economics and quantitative skills translate into careers in risk analytics, financial risk, and enterprise risk management.
This session will introduce students to:
- What risk analytics is and how it is used across finance, policy, technology, and corporate decision‑making
- How econometrics, statistics, and data analysis skills apply directly to real‑world risk problems
- Professional certification pathways (CRA and CRM) that complement an Economics degree
- Internship and applied project opportunities available through RAI
The workshop is especially relevant for students considering careers in finance, analytics, consulting, regulation, or graduate studies, and for those interested in strengthening the applied impact of their Economics training.
Location: WMC 1691
Dr. James Hurst is the President and CEO of the Risk Analytics Institute (RAI), a Canadian professional credentialing organization focused on risk analytics, financial risk, and enterprise risk management.
Dr. Hurst has extensive experience at the intersection of analytics, risk management, and professional education. He has worked across academia, industry, and applied research, with a particular focus on how quantitative methods—such as statistics, econometrics, and data analysis—inform real‑world decision‑making under uncertainty.
At RAI, he leads the development of professional certification programs, including the Certified Risk Analyst (CRA) and Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designations, and works closely with universities and industry partners to build pathways from academic training to professional practice.
The workshop will explore how Economics students can leverage their quantitative skill sets in applied risk roles and what career pathways are emerging in this space.
