Landscape has long been a vital part of Irish cultural identity, and this continues to be the case. It is widely recognised that landscape and environment are not fixed but dynamic – constantly responding to social change and crucially reflected in the visual art of the time. Drawing on her recent book, Landscape and Environment in Contemporary Irish Art, Yvonne Scott explores how artists depict the compelling realities of our present era, from a desire to escape into an imaginary world to confrontation with the physical environment. This lecture considers aspects of the National Gallery of Ireland's current exhibition, In Real Life, as it reveals how nature continues to provide a vital realm of consolation and renewal.
Dr Yvonne Scott is Emeritus Fellow and Associate Professor of Art History in Trinity College Dublin, and founding Director of TRIARC, the Trinity College Irish Art Research Centre. Her specialist lecture modules have ranged from Dutch art in the seventeenth century to global contemporary art. Her publications include essays on a range of modern and contemporary artists, from Jack Yeats to Georgia O’Keeffe, from Francis Bacon to Kathy Prendergast; recent books include Irish Art 1920–2020, Perspectives on change (co-edited, Royal Irish Academy), and Landscape and Environment in Contemporary Irish Art (Churchill House Press).
