About this Event
This book club will take place IN PERSON at Battery Park City Library.
This month we're reading: Times Square Red, Times Square Blue by Samuel Delany
What is "Friends of Dorothy"?
"Friend of Dorothy" is a historical code phrase. Used primarily between the 1940s and 1970s, it served as a discreet way for LGBTQ+ individuals to identify one another. This euphemistic inquiry served as a safe way to test if someone was part of the community without publicly revealing one's own orientation. The reference, subtle yet recognizable to the "in crowd," was to Dorothy Gale, a character portrayed by the queer icon Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.
About the Club:
Friends of Dorothy is a monthly conversation centered on LGBTQ+ books. All are welcome to join at the Battery Park City Library, provided they are willing to respect fellow members, the authors/their stories, and the space.
