Prabir Trio
5th Annual VeryAsian VA Celebration, featuring the Southeast Asian-inspired Funk of Afro Asia.
In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, VeryAsian VA will be hosting its 5th annual event celebration of Asian American creativity and community. The goal is to better highlight the breadth of ways Asian Americans exist and thrive in Charlottesville/Central VA, and to celebrate the many different facets of Asian American cultural expression and heritage.
This year's event will feature a variety of musical and cultural performances, including AfroAsia, Prabir Trio, Orion Redwold, Sylvia Chong, and a special lion dance from Laughing Dragon Kung Fu. Snacks and drinks will be available from various vendors, including local Asian-owned businesses Little Manila, RV Thai, Tealicious, and a special Popitos+Chimm Pizza Collab!
Afro Asia brings Charlottesville luminaries together to dive into a high-energy funk music style that was popular in Thailand in the 1970s. Jay Pun performs on phin, a Thai stringed instrument that adds a new vibe to American funk, along with Mike Chang on electric guitar, legendary bassist Houston Ross, Ivan Orr on keyboard, and Kelli Strawbridge on drums
