2024 Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara Selvabianca Vernaccia $22.94
Il Colombaio is a winery located in Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, the first white wine DOC established in Italy in 1966, later elevated to DOCG status in 1993. The story began in the 1950s with Mario, who worked in the vineyards as a young man. The winery itself was founded in 2002, when Mario’s youngest son studied viticulture and decided to apply his knowledge to the family’s winemaking heritage. His two older brothers soon joined, making it a true family venture.
This is 100% Vernaccia fermented in concrete and stainless steel.
2024 Clivo Altura Le Bighellone Pinot Noir $41.94
Born on the property of Corzano e Paterno to one of Tuscany’s favorite winemakers, William Goldschmidt grew up surrounded by family vines before spending five years working in Burgundy under Jean-Marc Roulot and other acclaimed French winemakers. He eventually returned to Tuscany with a fresh perspective inspired by Burgundy and, in 2020, began exploring single-vineyard Sangiovese and Pinot Noir.
The Pinot Nero vineyard is planted in the middle of a 2,000-hectare forest at 700 meters above sea level. The site is so cool that Sangiovese struggles to ripen, which is why Pinot Nero was planted there 25 years ago. The grapes are fermented with 50% whole clusters and aged in 600-liter new tonneaux and small French oak barrels previously used for one vintage.
2022 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Ama $38.94
Castello di Ama was founded in 1976 in Gaiole in Chianti, one of the most highly regarded subregions in the heart of Chianti Classico. The estate is currently led by CEO Lorenza Sebasti, a member of the second generation of one of the four founding families. The philosophy of the estate is for every bottle to express the uniqueness of the terroir.
First produced in 2010, Ama was created following the estate’s extensive replanting project. Winemaker Marco Pallanti chose to bottle the younger, more productive vines separately from the older plantings used in the San Lorenzo Gran Selezione. This is a blend of 96% Sangiovese and 4% Merlot, vinified separately in stainless steel tanks and aged for 12 months in second-passage oak barriques.
2023 San Guido Le Difese $46.94
In the 1940s, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta moved to Tenuta San Guido, a 3,000-hectare property included in his wife’s dowry. Recognizing the similarities between Tuscany’s Mediterranean climate and Bordeaux, he began experimenting with French grape varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, searching for the bouquet he admired in Bordeaux wines. Wine was produced privately from 1945 through 1967 before the first commercial release of Sassicaia in 1968.
Fruit for Le Difese is sourced from the estate’s younger vines. The wine is a blend of 65% Sangiovese and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation takes place on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by eight months of aging in oak barrels.
2023 Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino $53.94
Valdicava is located on the northern side of Montalcino in one of the region’s coolest zones. The winery was established in 1953 when Bramante Abbruzzese returned to his ancestral homeland of Montalcino. Today, his grandson Vincenzo Abbruzzese is credited with elevating Valdicava to international acclaim.
The estate typically produces both Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino each year. However, in 2023, the fruit was not deemed suitable for Brunello classification, so the entire production was bottled as Rosso di Montalcino. The wine is aged for one year.
2019 San Giorgio Ugolforte Riserva Brunello di Montalcino $119.94
Tenuta San Giorgio was established in 1982 in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, within the Montalcino wine region of Tuscany. As part of the ColleMassari group of estates, the vineyards are now managed and vinified by the acclaimed winemaking team behind Poggio di Sotto and Grattamacco.
The name “Ugolforte” comes from a legendary 12th-century bandit who led the people of Montalcino in rebellion against Siena. This wine is sourced from the estate’s oldest vines, averaging 20 years in age, planted between 250 and 400 meters above sea level in calcareous clay soils. The Mediterranean climate and nearly constant winds create ideal growing conditions for Brunello.
