Freshkills Park will be holding a Kayak volunteer opener and paddle to kick off the 2026 paddling season!
Volunteers will assist staff in cleaning and preparing our kayaks, paddles, pfds, and kayak access launch in preparation for the season of paddling ahead. Lunch will be provided. After we are completed with opener assignments, volunteers will be the first to start the season with a two-mile round trip paddle of Freshkills Park. Please note, participants must be 16 years or older.

Tour Description: This will be an approximately two mile round-trip paddle where we will explore the creeks and shorelines of Freshkills Park and experience its wildlife while the site is closed to the public.
Your ticket admits 1 car. All participants must provide their own car that will stay on-site the whole time. Participants may not use a bicycle, taxi or ride-share service due to ongoing construction. Each ticket holder may bring up to 4 additional guests in their car. During registration you will be asked about additional participants in your car. Due to limited reservations, carpooling with friends and family is encouraged. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Accessibility: This tour will be an approximately two-mile round-trip paddle. If you have any accessibility needs, please let us know in advance so we can best accommodate you. This program is open to 16+.
Plan Ahead: Be “tick aware” and “heat aware.” Wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy and wet, clothes that can get wet, and sunscreen. Stay hydrated and make sure to bring water with you. All participants will be asked to sign an activity waiver before entering the park. Those under 18 need to have the waiver signed by a parent or guardian and be accompanied by an adult.
Location: We will meet just before the DSNY Gate at 1000 West Service Road in Staten Island.
