In The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Geneviève, who works in her mother’s umbrella shop, is in love with Guy, a young mechanic. Their romance is interrupted when Guy is drafted for military service in Algeria. As she waits with little news and discovers she is pregnant, Geneviève faces pressure from her mother to choose security over love—ultimately marrying a wealthy man and leaving Cherbourg.
