Jazz is a freedom sound. This Black Music Month, 651 joins with the Jazz Generations Initiative to explore the movements, meanings and legacies of jazz in American society, with free events across four Tuesdays in June. Each is paired with a show (also free) that Thursday at Café Erzulie.

Experience The World Within: The Global Sounds of John Coltrane as saxophonist, flutist, and bandleader Irwin Hall offers a lecture, listening, and performance demonstration exploring the international influences that shaped Coltrane’s music and artistic vision. Through live demonstration, recorded examples, and conversation, Hall traces connections to Africa, Brazil, Spain, India, and the spiritual search at the center of Coltrane’s later work. Presented by the Jazz Generations Initiative, this program offers a deeper doorway into Hall and his band’s June 11 performance of The World Within.

Irwin Hall
Irwin Hall is a New York City-based saxophonist, flutist, composer, and bandleader whose high-energy performances bring jazz improvisation and global musical traditions into a vivid, immersive live experience. A graduate of Princeton University, Hall spent years living in Japan and China and traveling throughout Africa, Europe, and South America in search of the cultural threads that connect people across traditions.
That same wide-ranging musical perspective has taken Hall to stages around the world with artists including Melody Gardot and Dee Dee Bridgewater, with appearances alongside Ms. Lauryn Hill, El Debarge, and more. His latest project, The World Within: The Global Sounds of John Coltrane, draws inspiration from traditions connected to Africa, Brazil, Spain, and India, reimagining Coltrane’s music through expansive arrangements and spontaneous interplay while inviting listeners on a journey shaped by travel, cultural exchange, and tradition.
