Raise your voice! Discover your personal voice of exultation, praise, and joy; of protest, resistance, and challenge; of yearning, sorrow, and grief; of devotion, hope, and healing. Our voice is a powerful tool for self-expression, yet we often find ourselves blocked from using it fully. In this workshop, we will explore different forms of vocal expression through practical techniques and exercises. We will delve into aspects of our voice and body that we may have little experience with or have been shamed for in the past. By reclaiming these parts of ourselves, we create space for grief’s emotions and sounds to move freely through our voice and body. In doing so, we unlock the transformative, connective power of expressing grief through body and voice.
Lamentation—the ancient practice of vocal and emotional expression—takes many forms, from grief and sorrow to joy and celebration. It draws inspiration from traditions such as Irish keening, Finnish crying songs, professional mourning, and the Blues.
Vocal teacher Yinske Silva will guide you in exploring your personal ‘deep song’ and help you rediscover your unboundaried voice. Through laughter, breath, and sound, we’ll shed our workday selves and connect to the full spectrum of human emotion.
WHAT TO EXPECT
• Singing together in an atmosphere of play
• Connecting to dynamic sources of sound in your body and breath
• Exploring socially silenced sounds through improvisation
Whether you use your voice as an actor, singer, public speaker, or simply for the joy of vocal expression, this workshop will help you unlock new pathways to explore and express your fullest self.
While we will explore vocal and physical expressions of grief, this workshop is not centred on deep emotional processing or re-experiencing of grief. Deepen your connection to yourself, your passions, and your ability to express them artfully.
