FREE Somerset - Self Harm Awareness Training

Are you concerned that a child, young person or older adult might be engaging in self harm?

Somerset Council are working with Harmless to offer free online training support via MS Teams for people who want to understand more about self-injury in people of any age, with a specific focus on children and young people and older adults.

Harmless is a user informed self harm and suicide prevention service that offers an all-ages support service. Our aim is to promote hope and recovery for those in distress, their families, friends and colleagues. It is grounded on the ethos that with the right support life can and does get better.

Somerset Council is working with Harmless to offer a fully funded, 90-minute workshop to parents, carers and family members of children and young people who may be at risk of self harm.

This session will cover the following

• Understand self harm and who it can affect

• Identify reasons that can lead a young person to self-harm

• Recognise the stigma surrounding self-harm and the impact this can have

• Understand the wider impact self-harm has on friends and family, with a focus on parents/carers

• Raise confidence in responding to/supporting young people who self-harm

• Establish how to maintain your own self-care and wellbeing

• Identify a range of local and national resources/services/information to support young people who self-harm

• Understand the importance of recovery

• Q & A

Our online training is delivered via MS Teams.

Once registered, you will receive an email of confirmation. Access details for the session will be sent a week before the training date.

We will provide all delegates with frequent breaks during the session to ensure that screen fatigue is kept to a minimum.

Self-Care

The topics raised in the training delivery can be emotionally evocative. It is strongly advised that delegates should be aware of the personal impact that training in self harm awareness can have and should seek the appropriate reassurance, support and guidance from the Trainer delivering the session if they become distressed or affected by any of the topics raised. As an organisation, we encourage that all delegates practice self-care during their time on the course, ensuring they take adequate breaks and manage their own self-disclosure. All trainers have direct contact with a clinical team should needs arise to implement additional support.

Cancellations

If the delegate/organisation cancels a training place:

• All cancellations must be confirmed via email to [email protected] at the earliest opportunity
• If a delegate is unable to attend the training, Harmless will allow a replacement to take their place if we are notified about any changes at least 48 hours before the training is due to take place. Replacement delegates will be required to complete a separate training registration form before we can accept them on the course
• If Harmless is forced to cancel the training due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances:
• Harmless will endeavour to cancel the training, if necessary, at the earliest opportunity
• Harmless cannot accept responsibility for any losses incurred by late cancellation
