⭐ FREE Pre‑Matariki Experience
Step into the dark and follow the stars.
Join Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei for an engaging and interactive hīkoi up Maungakiekie, held in preparation for Matariki. Guided by the night sky, you’ll discover the stories, history, and cultural practices of Ngāti Whātua, while learning how Matariki has been traditionally observed and honoured in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Expect connection, kōrero, and moments of reflection as we walk the maunga together — sharing knowledge, laughter, and new perspectives between dusk and dawn.
🌌 Session Times
Choose one of two unique experiences:
🌅 Sunrise Hīkoi | 5:00–7:00am
Walk through the stillness of the pre‑dawn hours as the sky begins to lighten and a new day emerges.
🌇 Sunset Hīkoi | 6:00–8:00pm
Journey into the deepening dark as the sun sets and night falls.
👣 Who Is This For?
This activation is open to Maungakiekie‑Tāmaki residents.
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, as this is a walking hīkoi on the maunga.
