FREE movie screening: 1776

Come join us at The Frida Cinema for a special screening of the classic musical 1776! Don't miss out on this opportunity to watch one of the greatest films about the Revolutionary War period come to life on the big screen. Best of all, the film is FREE, but be sure to reserve your tickets ahead of time!

Based on the 1969 Tony award-winning musical, this 1972 film adaptation features many of the actors reprising their original Broadway roles, including William Daniels (Knight Rider, Boy Meets World) in the lead role of John Adams. With Boston Harbor still stained from over-taxed British tea, a revolution is brewing in the colonies, and now England has thousands of troops headed for America's shores to squelch her subjects' freedom-loving spirit. It's up to John Adams (William Daniels), Benjamin Franklin (Howard Da Silva) and Thomas Jefferson (Ken Howard) to convince a stubborn congress of British colonists to unite and turn the inevitable war with England into a Declaration of Independence!

The stage production of1776 came out in 1969 during a tumultuous time in American history and created a sensation on the level of Hamilton, maybe more so. Its Broadway run lasted three years, and the production toured widely. Groups across the political spectrum, from the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion to New Left activists, claimed it as their own. The undersecretary of the Navy wanted to stage it for the troops in Vietnam. The San Francisco touring company of Hair went as a group to see 1776; at the stage door, the actors playing hippies sang “America the Beautiful” to the actors playing Founders. Towns and cities, red and blue, made special proclamations about the musical. It won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, beating out the epoch-defining Hair. The film was the Thanksgiving attraction at New York's Radio City Music Hall, where it played to capacity crowds.
