Art Steps is a series of creative making activities produced by artists for children to enjoy with family and friends.
In this Art Steps, Thai installation artist Korakrit Arunanondchai invites children and their families to create a mixed media and video artwork together.
Inspired by the artist’s own process in the creation of his works on display at the Gallery in the exhibition New Asian Art, this program brings participants into the heart of an ongoing video artwork, inviting them to be both makers and collaborators.
At the centre of this experience are black-and-white film stills taken from the artist’s video work. Children and adults are encouraged to paint directly onto the images, using the same tactile technique the artist employs in their own work. The painted stills will be gathered and re-sequenced into a new stop-motion animation video.
“We invite children and their adults into a living, breathing artwork—a workshop where fingers become brushes, stories unfold frame by frame, and stillness becomes motion.
The act of painting becomes not just an individual expression, but a collective response to the question: What happens when many hands touch the same story?”
- Korakrit Arunanondchai
This activity is designed for children aged 5 to 12. Younger siblings are welcome to join. All children must be accompanied by a parent/carer. Bookings essential for all children and adults.
New Asian Art is on display in Galleries 19 & 20 from 13 Sep – 18 Apr 2026. This exhibition highlights recent acquisitions by artists from across Asia and the Asian diaspora in a range of media including paintings, prints, textiles, video, photography and multidisciplinary installation.
