This March, we unpick the theme of Wear and Tear, revealing the stories, inspiration and cultural significance of the items that adorn us, uncovering how time, use and the body leave their mark.
Join Beatrice Thompson, Associate Curator, Asian and Pacific Art, for a talk on Body adorned.
Beatrice will discuss a selection of works featured in Body adorned, an expansive display celebrating the National Gallery’s jewellery collection. Featuring over 370 works by First Nations, Australian, European, American, Asian and Pacific artists, this intentionally maximalist presentation honours jewellery as both an artistic mode and form of expression.
Discover how ornamentation transcends decoration –revealing cultural lineage, personal stories and artistic ingenuity through the intimate act of adorning the body.
