Filmakers Synopsis:
“It’s as if the coffee slowly sinks into the sea. Everything around changes, but not here,” wrote Swedish expat writer Ulf Peter Hallberg in 1996, describing a bar on Sophienstrasse in Berlin.
We don’t know if that timeless bar still exists today — or if it has vanished like so many buildings, stories, and voices over the past 30 years.
Born to Die in Berlin is a documentary about the urban and historical erasure brought on by property speculation, gentrification, and touristification.
“The light of a spotlight on the edge of a pit falls upon the remains of an old building. You can see its ancient basements. They resemble endless crypts that seem to stretch beneath all of Berlin,” Hallberg wrote again in 1996.
Today, in 2024, those crypts are gone. What remains? A homogenized, globalized version of the city consumed by speculative growth? Or pockets of resistance and regeneration?
Through the voices of those who live in and love Berlin — cherishing both its present and its history — Born to Die in Berlin searches for answers. From the city’s resistance to Amazon’s expansion, to grassroots fights for housing rights, and the preservation of social fabric, creative spaces, and living memory, Berlin reveals itself as determined not to die. It is a human and social stand against the forces of speculation.
