Empire Records (1995) is a cult-classic comedy about a chaotic, independent record store fighting against being absorbed by a corporate chain. Centered on one hectic day in the lives of its colorful staff, the film blends ’90s alternative music, youthful rebellion, and sharp humor while exploring themes of friendship, self-discovery, and the importance of not “selling out.”
Rex Manning Day, celebrated by fans every April 8, has become a real-world tribute to Empire Records and everything it stands for: independent music, record store culture, and not selling out. What started as a fictional promo day in the film is now an annual inside joke and celebration, with fans revisiting the movie, blasting the soundtrack, and showing love to their favorite local record stores. “Say no more, mon amour.”
