Feathers, Ink & Freedom: Writing America’s Story
Step back in time and discover how people wrote and shared ideas at the very beginning of our nation! As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, families are invited to explore the fascinating world of quill pens, ink, and elegant handwriting—long before computers, keyboards, or even modern pens.
Try writing with a feather quill, practice old-fashioned penmanship, and see realistic reproductions of important early American documents. Along the way, learn how careful handwriting and handwritten letters helped shape the ideas that built our country. This hands-on program is designed to be fun, creative, and welcoming for children and grown-ups alike.
Creative Activities Include:
- Practice calligraphy using colonial-style lettering
- Create parchment-style artwork and documents with feather quills and ink
- Make a tricorn hat like those worn in the 1700s
- Design a patriotic banner using scissors, glue, and colorful paper
A perfect blend of history, creativity, and family fun!

Boone Youth Explorers is our free monthly program designed to spark curiosity and connect kids with local history through hands-on experiences.
Boone Youth Explorers is generously supported by Missouri Humanities and Missouri Arts Council. Financial assistance for this program has been provided by the City of Columbia, Office of Cultural Affairs.
