Painter and art history educator Nan Morrison discusses horses throughout the art history
About this Event

The contribution of the horse to western civilization plays an unmatched role in the human experience. These powerful, unpredictable, remarkable animals have been used and trained for centuries for their unique ability, skill, endurance and adaptability in warfare, law enforcement, pageantry, entertainment, therapeutic riding and much more. The horse has played an invaluable role in agriculture, transportation, recreation and sporting activities.
It is no surprise that for centuries artists have depicted the image of the horse. Whether creating a commissioned, larger than life sized bronze equestrian statue to memorialize the legacy of a war hero, painting an outdoor scene of everyday life, a religious narrative or using recycled materials to sculpt the essence of a horse relaxed and at ease - equestrian images depicting their multi-faceted use abound in the iconography of art. It would be impossible to fully document the human experience void of this breathtaking animal.
I hope you can join me as we trot through an impressive and diverse selection of equestrian images.

The discussion will begin with exploring the charm and wonder of the early cave paintings as well as works by Donatello (1386-1466), Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), Augustus Saint Gardens (1848-1907), Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and Deborah Butterfield (b.1949).
Some of the prominent bronze equestrian statues located on prime real estate in our nation’s capital city will be highlighted, as well.
Please join us for this wild and wonderful RIDE through art history!
