Art Labs is a series of artist-led workshops connecting young audiences with artists, artmaking and the National Gallery collection.
In this Art Lab, join fashion designer and artist Nixi Killick and like-minded creative peers for a sculpture-making workshop inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s THE SPIRITS OF THE PUMPKINS DESCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS.
Begin with a close look at Kusama’s work, observing how the artist uses simple repeated shapes to create an immersive installation inviting viewers into an experience of both confined and infinite space, a round trip from the microscopic to the cosmic.
Take part in a guided group discussion led by a National Gallery artist educator and learn more about Kusama’s work. Then work with Nixi through hands-on experimentation with pattern, rhythm, repetition, bold colours, mark-making and materiality to create your own abstract sculptural form.
All art materials provided.
THE SPIRITS OF THE PUMPKINS DESCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS is now on display at the Western Plains Cultural Centre, NSW until 10 November 2026, as part of the National Gallery of Australia's Sharing the National Collection initiative.
This program is generously supported by the National Gallery’s Learning & Digital Patron, Tim Fairfax AC.
