FREE COMMUNITY EVENTMy name is John Queen President of the Bayside H.O.Y.A.S., Inc. and on behalf of our organization you are invited to the Frederick Douglass “Day of Acknowledgement” award ceremony, Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at Washington College in Chestertown, Md.
This day of acknowledgment illuminates the roles of African Americans in the history of the Eastern Shore and lifting their contributions, serving as an exciting celebration of the heritage and culture of the African American community.
This event will be a full day of education and entertainment starting with the Emmy award winning Water’s Edge: Black Waterman of the Chesapeake documentary. The documentary will conclude with a guest panel of Alexis Aggrey, Emmy Award winning director, Dr. Clara Small, Salisbury University professor emerita and local historian, Imani Black the Founder & CEO of Minorities in Aquaculture, Captain Tyrone Meredith a 5th generation fisherman, Artist Marc Castelli, and Pete Lesher, Chief Historian and Ambassador at Large from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
A special performance by Composer and Singer Marlon Saunders, composer of the musical work, “ISAAC: A Musical Journey.” The work is based on the published autobiographical narrative “Life of Isaac Mason as a Slave.” The 2025 Frederick Douglass recipients will be Reverend James Jones, Convener of Caucus of African American Leaders on the Eastern Shore, and Vice commander of NABVETS, National Association of Black Veterans, Vincent Leggett, author of the book, The Chesapeake Bay Through Ebony Eyes, and founder of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation, and Marlon Saunders CEO and founder of The Seamless Voice
