Few individuals have shaped the spirit of Walkway Over the Hudson more than Fred Schaeffer. Join us on Sunday, April 12 from 2-3 p.m. at the Walkway's Center Overlook (by the flagpole) as we celebrate the start of Walkway’s 17th season with the unveiling of a special plaque recognizing Fred’s role in helping bring the Walkway to life. We will also launch the Fred Schaeffer Ambassador Legacy Fund in his honor. The event is free to attend and open to all. A reception at the Ulster Welcome Center in Highland will follow. RSVPs are requested by visiting walkway.org.
Fred envisioned the Walkway as the Friendliest Park in the World — and as the Walkway’s first Ambassador, he welcomed visitors personally, setting the tone for the culture of warmth, hospitality, and community that continues to define the experience today. As visitors grew from thousands to millions, that spirit grew with them, rooted in Fred’s simple belief that human connection is at the heart of the Walkway. Today, more than 150 red-vested Ambassadors carry Fred’s vision forward by greeting visitors, leading tours, driving the tram, supporting events, and helping guests discover the beauty and history of the Hudson Valley.
The Fred Schaeffer Ambassador Legacy Fund ensures that the spirit that first welcomed folks to Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park continues to define every visit, every greeting, and every moment of connection high atop the Hudson River.
With your support, the fund will:
- Recruit and inspire the next generation of Ambassadors.
- Provide enhanced training in accessibility, safety, and visitor engagement.
- Equip volunteers with uniforms and tools that reflect the pride they take in their service.
- Support the coordination that keeps this remarkable program thriving.
